Light-field near-eye display using eccentric lens array

Light-field near-eye displays (LF-NEDs) can reconstruct focus-adjustable three-dimensional images by reproducing light rays that reach the eye from objects. The field of view (FOV) of LF-NEDs, which consist of a display and lens array, is highly dependent on the size of the display, thus rendering it difficult to improve the FOV by changing the focal length, pitch, or number of elemental lenses comprising the lens array. In this study, we propose a method of expanding the FOV by employing a lens array, in which the optical axis of each of the elemental lenses is decentered toward the center of the lens array to allow light rays to enter the eye at a wide angle, and present the results obtained from our experiments. |
