An Examination on Visualization Methods and Multi-Dimensional Data Understanding in VR Immersive Analytics

In recent years, technologies utilizing immersive VR environments have developed remarkably, and a research area has been formed to support data analytics by humans using this new technology, which is called immersive analytics. Interaction techniques of immersive analytics emphasize intuitive operation, and one of those techniques is ImAxes. However, ImAxes can only store one-dimensional data in an axis. Therefore, in this study, we store time-series one-dimensional data in an axis and visualize time-series variation in spatial information on a single 3D scatter plot using animation. Here, we proposed a “time-varying function” by which time-series one-dimensional data are stored in an axis and a “bar graph function” by which point data in a 3D scatter diagram are displayed as bar graphs, and we investigated the usefulness of the proposed functions through subject experiments. The results showed that the addition of the time-varying function facilitates the understanding of time-series variation in spatial information and the bar graph function improves the ease of data understanding using ImAxes. |
