SGGX Parameter Estimation for Procedural Yarn Models

(in English) This paper proposes an estimation method for SGGX distributions that model the normal distribution functions from yarn geometries generated by a procedural yarn model. To realistically reproduce the appearance of fabrics and yarns, it is essential to accurately model their optical properties based on fine geometric structures such as plies and fibers. The light reflectance model of yarns requires the statistical distribution of normals, and the SGGX distribution is used to represent the normal distribution of yarns with that of an ellipsoid.Previous cloth rendering methods set parameters of SGGX distributions manually. The proposed method estimates a covariance matrix of the normal distribution of a yarn, whose eigen vectors are identical to those of the SGGX distribution. Then the eigen values of the SGGX distribution are estimated by using the eigen vectors. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying our method to several yarn geometries generated from the procedural yarn model.
