Investigation of Movement Direction Prediction Methods Using Walk-in-Place Motion

In this study, we examine a method to estimate the direction of movement from stepping actions. Although joystick or button operations are commonly used for navigation in virtual environments, there is a growing demand for hand-free operation methods to enhance immersion. Therefore, we investigated a technique for estimating movement direction from stepping actions by utilizing motion capture data. We collected a total of 30 datasets under six different conditions, extracted relevant features, and constructed a learning model. As a result, we achieved an average accuracy of 0.900, and in certain conditions, a perfect classification accuracy of 1.00. These findings suggest that it is feasible to estimate the direction of movement solely from stepping actions. |
