In this study, we developed a prototype system for VR hazard perception test using omnidirectional camera-captured footage, aiming to enhance realism and reducing production costs. A driver's ability to recognize hazards while driving is crucial for safe driving, and VR-based hazard perception tests have gained attention as an evaluation method. Conventional approaches using 3D models face trade-offs: simplified models lack realism, while highly detailed models incur high production costs. Additionally, methods that present real-world footage suffer from discrepancies between camera viewpoints and the actual driving environment. To address these issues, our study integrates real-world exterior and mirror footage with a 3D vehicle model, creating a more realistic driving environment in VR. The system is presented through a head-mounted display, providing an immersive experience. In particular, we separately capture and integrate footage from the rearview and side mirrors, closely replicating the visual information available to drivers in real-world scenarios. This approach improves the naturalness of situational awareness through mirror usage and gaze movement. Furthermore, by utilizing eye-tracking technology in VR, we can record and analyze drivers' gaze data, enabling an objective assessment of their hazard perception ability. |
