A Pilot Study of Investigating Older Drivers' Driving Characteristics Using Naturalistic Dashcam Data

In this study, we focused on the fact that a large proportion of traffic accidents involving older drivers stem from inadequate scanning behavior for checking safety, particularly noting that side-impact collisions at intersections, characteristic of older drivers, account for more than 70% of intersection-related accidents. To investigate older drivers’ actual driving behaviors, we employed Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) data, which capture daily driving activities. From the NDS data recorded using a drive recorder capable of filming both the vehicle interior and exterior, we extracted segments near intersections and classified them based on the presence of a stop sign and the degree of visibility. We then applied deep learning techniques to the in-vehicle footage to estimate the driver’s face orientation, thereby evaluating scanning behavior. The analysis revealed that, especially when older drivers proceed straight through intersections on residential roads without a stop-sign, they do not sufficiently adopt driving behaviors to reduce the risk of side-impact collisions at intersections, even in cases where visibility is diminished by nearby buildings. |
