Improving grasping accuracy and its effect on sense of agency through gaze tracking in VR

In virtual environments, when attempting to perform the task of picking up a target object from a dense cluster of small items, an unintended issue arises where the avatar's hand grasp function is activated by accidentally touching nearby objects. This phenomenon, which is uncommon in the real world, results in grasping an unintended object, leading to a decrease in the sense of agency. To address this issue, we devised a Gaze Assist Hand Manipulation Method (GAHM), in which the grasp function is only activated when the avatar's hand approaches a certain range (hereinafter Gazing Area) from the point of gaze. This method allows for efficient selection and grasping of the intended object from densely packed items, and we also report the findings from evaluating the optimal size of the Gazing Area. |
