Beyond 5G / 6G, coverage expansion technology is required to provide high-capacity communications in the high-frequency band to a wide range of end users. On the other hand, millimeter wave, which has been introduced from 5G, has a dominant line-of-sight (LoS) component, making it more difficult to form a uniform area compared to conventional LTE. In the case of deploying multiple millimeter wave stations in the same area, it is necessary to consider not only interference but also the actual environment (e.g., buildings and trees). Therefore, the Network Controlled Repeater (NCR), which is currently being studied in the 3GPP, is expected to improve the coverage effect by beamforming both at the base station side and at the user side. In this paper, we report on the study of placement methods and device development using millimeter-wave NCRs to improve millimeter-wave coverage. |
