Ball release detection for timing ability assessment

This study aims to detect accurate release timing from video information. Timing ability is important in baseball hitting. However, quantitative measurement of timing ability has been very difficult. Recently, however, Aoki et al. proposed a method to measure timing ability. However, this method uses a special sensor called a “trackman” to acquire release timing. Therefore, it is difficult to apply this method to a general baseball environment. In this study, we propose a method to obtain release timing with high accuracy based on image processing using only camera images. When image processing is applied to the video image taken from the side that includes the pitcher and the batter, which is used in the method of Aoki et al. Therefore, it is difficult to detect the ball using existing object recognizers, and automatic detection of the release is also difficult. The proposed method acquires pitching release candidates based on the size of the motion and selects releases by unsupervised clustering to acquire releases with high accuracy for low-resolution video. |
