[Memorial Lecture] Field Trial of Wireless IP Remote Production using TDD-based FPU
Fumito ITO (NHK)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories have been researching on an advancement of mobile relay FPUs (Field Pick-up Units) for use in moving live programs such as road races. We proposed a MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) system with adaptive transmission control that introduces bidirectional transmission using TDD (Time Division Duplex) into the conventional unidirectional FPU and dynamically controls transmission parameters according to changing channel conditions. This transmission technique was also standardized as ARIB STD-B75 by the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB). On the other hand, IP remote production recently has been attracting much attention. IP remote production connects the relay site and remote site such as broadcasting station via IP network and controls the equipment at the relay site from the remote site, leading to an advantage of efficiency by allowing production with the minimal transportation of personnel and equipment. In typical IP remote production, the relay site and the broadcast station are connected by wired lines such as optical fiber. However, if bidirectional IP transmission by FPU becomes possible, it enables IP remote production of mobile relays. In this lecture, the author will describe an outdoor transmission experiment that tried a remote control of production equipment such as cameras inside a moving vehicle using the ARIB STD-B75 TDD-based FPU system with a function of IP signal transmission. The result showed that 4K video was transmitted at approximately 100 Mbps using a high-bitrate channel designed for main video signals. At the same time, in-vehicle equipment was controlled in real time with a latency of approximately 33 ms using a low-latency channel designed for transmitting necessary signals of remote production such as low-latency videos and control signals. After that, we will discuss future developments.
