Developing Interface for controlling camera & visual angle in VR using eye movement

(in English) In VR environment using a head-mounted display (HMD), the rotation of the camera (viewpoint) in the virtual space is usually implemented with the actual head motion by head position tracking. In that case, the physical load of participant and the physical space required to move in VR environment often increase, making it difficult to use VR system. In this study, we proposed a new interface for viewpoint rotation in virtual space to reduce the physical load of users and the space for movement by tracking eye position instead of head. In the experiments, we compared some aspects of head tracking, eye tracking, trackball, and joystick: usability, task completion time, and accuracy. The participant had to find the target floating in VR space and take it in the center of the visual field. As a result, the interface using eye position scored higher than the trackball and the joystick in all assessments, and was comparable to the that using head position.
