The stone-circle image sensor has a circular PD surrounded by multiple vertical transfer gates (VTGs). By applying a high voltage (VH) to the VTGs in turn, a very high frame rate can be achieved. There are a variety of configurations in the image sensor family. Their performance is theoretically analyzed. Consequently, for a provisional resolution target of 100 ps (10 Gfps), a planar Ge-in-Si structure for SWIR light remained as the most practical one, in which a Ge PD is simply surrounded by a Si transfer layer with the VTGs. As a symbolic application, cancer detection by a next-generation gated fluorescence diffuse optical tomography is proposed, which requires multi-framing by a single shot at the temporal resolution of 100 ps in the SWIR range. |
