In Japan, the frequency of abnormal weather conditions leading to sudden reductions in visibility is increasing. Under such conditions, it becomes challenging for drivers to aware of their vehicle's position, driving assistance measures such as highlighting lane lines using roadside lamps have been investigated. However, due to the ubiquitous potential for abnormal weather, roadside assistance alone has its limitations. Therefore, this study investigates vehicle-mounted assistance for low visibility conditions using Head-Up Display (HUD) in a VR driving environment. Providing lane-keeping assistance information via HUD is expected to support drivers' lane-keeping tasks. However, overloading drivers with information could potentially mitigate the assistance effectiveness or lead to excessive focus on the HUD, inducing negative effects. This study compares the effects of lane-keeping assistance and gaze rates toward HUD under two conditions: one displaying only the deviation from the lane center, and the other additionally displaying vehicle yaw angle information. Experimental results showed positive effects on lane-keeping assistance when only displaying deviation from the lane center, whereas the condition with added vehicle yaw angle information led to increased HUD attention, demonstrating a negative effect. Therefore, merely increasing the volume of information could lead to adverse effects, underscoring the importance of prioritizing which information to present. |
