In this study, we propose a Push-Push voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) using a varactor-loaded quasi-distributed-element transmission-line (QDE-TL) resonator. The proposed VCO consists of two sub-oscillators, varactor-loaded QDE-TL resonator, and output circuit connected to both ends of the resonator. The output circuit contributes to stabilize the output power of the 2nd harmonic signal. Although the structure is simple, the 2nd harmonic signal can be extracted by the Push-Push oscillation principle. Additionally, the oscillation frequency can be easily tuned by a DC bias voltage of the varactors. Output power stabilization and wideband frequency tuning are discussed, and the performances are verified by prototype circuits. As the control voltage changes from 1.0 to 6.5 V, the output frequency varies from 15.36 to 15.96 GHz, and the output power of the 2nd harmonics is within the range from -11.3 to -3.3 dBm. |
