Proposal of accommodation-invariant image generation using tunable lenses to mitigate visual fatigue of HMD

Head-mounted displays have the problem of the visual fatigue caused by the vergence-accommodation conflict. The generation of the accommodation-invariant range, in which image blur does not change, is one of the solutions for this problem. In this study, we propose a technique to generate the accommodation-invariant range using tunable lenses. In the proposed method, the focal length of the tunable lenses is varied faster than the video rate of the display, and the depth position of the virtual image is altered rapidly in the depth direction. We constructed a monocular display system to verify the proposed technique, and confirmed the generation of the accommodation-invariant range. |
