Management of exploration type design for environment -- Cases of development of biomass plastic and Biodegradable plastic in Japan and Germany --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, discussions on environmental issues such as marine plastic waste, global warming, carbon offsetting, and food loss reduction have become increasingly important. In particular, the debate on the use of plastics has expanded from the perspective of protecting limited petroleum resources, to the need to reduce the use of single-use plastics because plastic waste is polluting the environment as it flows into the oceans, to the need to reduce the carbon footprint of the plastic product cycle. In a nutshell, designing plastics for environmental adaptation does not mean that any one specific element alone will achieve optimal design for environmental adaptation, because environmental problems cannot be solved without complex causal relationships in society. Rather than pursuing environmental adaptation as a single technical issue, a more optimal solution for environmental adaptation may be found by utilizing a broader range of exploratory problem-solving capabilities. Therefore, this paper compares environmental adaptation design in Europe, which is limited to biodegradable plastics, with the development and application of biomass plastics in Japan, where social waste sorting and thermal recycling are also considered. The case study shows that Japan's broad problem-solving capabilities and quick trial-and-error adjustments may lead to efficient environmental adaptive design.
