Analysis of auditory characteristics of distorted music

Recent commercial trends for high sound pressure music brought about the modification of music so as to increase the sound pressure, which may result in sound distortion. In this paper, we try to clarify the relationship between the physical and perceptual distortion. We conducted a set of listening tests to examine whether the listeners may notice the distortion, by using several pieces of artificially distorted sound. As a result, it was found that there was a threshold above which the listeners notice the distortion much easier. It was also suggested that the distortion is less noticeable if dissonance or high frequency component exists. |
