In this invited talk, I will cover recent research trends on Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays (OST-HMD) and introduce vision augmentation—an emerging technology realized by future OST-HMDs. OST-HMDs realize Augmented Reality (AR), which superimposes a virtual image on the user's view and overwrites the world seen by the user. Given the commercialization of consumer Virtual Reality (VR) HMD since 2014, that of consumer OST-HMDs has also accelerated. In the recent research of OST-HMDs, researchers have actively presented display technologies combining original hardware and advanced image processing, especially computational photography. This movement attracts how to maintain the fidelity of AR images on OST-HMDs. The fidelity referred here means the space, time, and perceptual consistency of the AR image against the reality, including calibration of display–eye position, rendering latency, and reproduction of light field. If we realize such true AR image presentation, the future OST-HMD can freely control human vision, and it will lead people to gain a more pleasant life by augmenting human vision through such visual control. Towards this vision augmentation idea, this talk first introduces existing OST-HMD technologies, state-of-the-art research on OST-HMD techniques for high fidelity AR, and the possibility of vision augmentation techniques in the future. |
