Development of 120-fps Super Hi-Vision Compression Recorder

In NHK, a next generation broadcasting system, called Super Hi-Vision (SHV), has been researched. This paper describes a 120-fps SHV compression recorder that we newly developed. A compact constant bit-rate control method for 12-bit depth extended JPEG coding was incorporated in the recorder. The constant bit-rate control method can predict the compression parameters to keep code length within the target bit-rate by pre-encoding images sampled at the coding block from the original 8K images and using an experimentally determined compression parameter conversion table. In addition, high-performance removable medium being suitable for the constant bit-rate recording were developed. By combining these techniques, real-time compression recording of 120-fps SHV video on the compact recorder was achieved. |
