Video input/output devices, video processing devices, and LSI design/manufacturing technologies support high quality digital terrestrial/satellite broadcasting, IPTV, and visual communication services. Another key factor indispensable to these digital video services is a video coding technology that compresses digital video signals for economical transmission and storage. In this talk, the development of video coding technologies is reviewed, and their contributions to ICT industries and their applications to ultra-high definition video services are remarked on. Beyond 4K and 8K, immersive telepresence technology Kirari! is also discussed, which enables users to feel as if they are experiencing the atmosphere and impression of the sports venue, wherever they are. Kirar! is a technnology for transmitting not only audio and video information but also environmental information such as lighting and temperature of the source site. Key technologies of Kirari! are compression, transmission, and reproduction of ultra-high presence audio, video, and environmental information with absolute time synchronization. |
