Barium ferrite (BaFe) tape has better write and read-back characteristics due to its small effective head/tape magnetic spacing (dMag + aTra, where dMag is the magnetic spacing and aTra is the transition parameter) as compared with metal particle (MP) tape, and exhibits low friction despite the small spacing loss. To understand why BaFe tape simultaneously exhibits low friction and small spacing, dMag, aTra and the head/tape physical spacing (dPh) were investigated and compared with MP tapes. As a result, we found that using BaFe tape can reduce both dMag and aTra while maintaining a similar friction (dPh) as that of MP tape. The ability to reduce these parameters is considered to be due to a particle property specific to barium ferrite (particle shape, magnetic uniformity). These results suggest that BaFe tape is superior to MP tape for high-density recording. |
